Burlington is the most populous city in Vermont and a significant education and economic center in the area. The city has a population of just over 42,000 and is a relatively popular place to live for the Northern New England area. Its focus on education and green energy, paired with economic opportunities, draw many new residents to the city.
Economy and Education
The most significant industrial sectors in Burlington are education, healthcare, trade, transportation and utilizes. In 2011, unemployment was at only 4.8 percent, one of the lowest in the country for metropolitan areas.
The two largest employers in the city are the University of Vermont Medical Center and the University of Vermont. The school plays a major role in the economy including attracting young people to the city.
Other major employers include General Electric, General Dynamics, Burton Snowboards, and Bruegger’s. Ben and Jerry’s was founded in Burlington but is now headquartered in nearby South Burlington.
The Burlington School District operates 10 schools and covers around 3,600 students. In addition to the University of Vermont Medical Center, Champlain College and the Community College of Vermont are located in the city.

Other attractions including the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, Fletcher Free Library and several small live venues. The universities attract a lot of nightlife and musical talent including Phish, which originally began at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
