With nearly 63,000 residents, Cheyenne is the most populous city in Wyoming as well as its capital. Fans of this western city love its small-town atmosphere, its proximity to Denver and its access to vast natural beauty. More than 50 locations in this picturesque city are included in the National Register of Historic Places.

Living in Cheyenne

The city is home to a host of outdoor recreation opportunities, including a public ice skating center, pool, skateboard park, playground, botanical gardens, paddle boat rentals, a mini-golf course, and two full-size golf courses. The Greater Cheyenne Greenway provides 37 miles of hiking and biking trails that connect the city’s neighborhoods and parks.

Frontier Days, Cheyenne’s premier annual event, is the nation’s largest rodeo. This celebration takes place during the last full week in July and encompasses rodeo events as well as parades and a carnival. The city is also home to seven museums, all of which offer free smartphone-guided audio tours.

Cheyenne students are served by Laramie County School District #1. Public schools in Cheyenne boast higher spending per student than the average cost per student for the U.S. The city is also home to Laramie County Community College.

Working in Cheyenne

Many Cheyenne residents are employed by the city or state government, the U.S. Air Force or the National Guard. In addition to these public sector jobs, economic opportunity in the city has been bolstered by Cheyenne Leads, a development agency. Because the city is so windy, it’s also a research hub for the development of wind-related energy innovations.
