Long Beach is a large city and port in Southern California and part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. It’s a popular place to live due to its climate, proximity to LA and economic significance. Downtown Long Beach is about 22 miles south of downtown Los Angeles and the cities share a fairly large border.

Although the city first started to boom due to the oil industry, this has been progressively declining. The Port of Long Beach is the second busiest in the country and one of the largest in the world. The aerospace industry has also played a significant role and Boeing is the largest private employer. These values are 156 percent above the national average. They are slightly below Los Angeles but still relatively high for the area and California at large.

Lifestyle and Culture

Like much of coastal southern California, Long Beach has a temperate, Mediterranean climate. This makes the lifestyle of the city very outdoor-friendly and the beach and boardwalk areas are particularly popular.

The city includes a number of art museums, including the Long Beach Museum of Art, located in the historic Elizabeth Milbank Anderson residence. It also has a strong music scene including the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, Long Beach Symphony and many concert venues. It is the origin of many famous bands and musicians including Sublime, Snoop Dogg and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

The public school system is mostly administered by the 94-school Long Beach Unified School District. This is a very diverse district and serves 81,000 students and employs 8,000 people.
