Manchester CT


Manchester is a town in Connecticut and part of Hartford County. With a population of 58,000 as of 2010, it’s a smaller municipality in the Hartford metropolitan area. It’s known as the “City of Collage Charms” reflecting its smaller feel in a more urbanized region.

Culture and Education

Manchester has a strong Scottish heritage. It has the second-oldest continuously operating pipe band in the country. The town also houses four museums including a restored firehouse, the Lutz Children’s Museum, the Old Manchester Museum, and the Cheney Homestead Museum.

Wickham Park and the Case Mountain Recreational Area provide opportunities for walking, hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. Manchester is a famed runner’s town and hosts the Manchester Road Race, the second most popular race for New Englanders after the Boston Marathon. The town is home to the Manchester Cricket Club and Manchester Running Company.

The public school system in Manchester includes four high schools, three middle schools, and nine elementary schools. These are also two magnet schools and five private schools serving the town. Manchester Community College is the only post-secondary institution within Manchester. However, there are several universities and colleges in the surrounding Hartford metropolitan area.


Primarily a residential town, many of those living in Manchester, Connecticut work in other parts of the Hartford metropolitan area. Businesses in the town include The Shoppes at Buckland Hills and two other malls. The Manchester Memorial Hospital is located in the city, as is Shady Glen, a renowned restaurant.

Historically, Manchester was home to the Cheney family silk mills. Although no longer operating, the mills now form the Cheney Brothers Historic District.
