Situated along the Mississippi River, Memphis, Tennessee, is located in the southwestern part of the state and has a population of nearly 653,000 people. The largest city along the river, it’s also one of the most historic and features several distinct neighborhoods.

Things to Do in Memphis

There is no shortage of activities and destinations in Memphis, especially if you love jazz music. May is especially popular. Memphis in May is a month-long celebration that includes the Beale Street Music Festival, a World Championship of Barbecue, the Great River Run, and International Week. There are also a variety of film festivals, art festivals, and much more throughout the year. Other popular points of interest include Graceland, Sun Studio, and the Memphis Pyramid.

Safety in Memphis

While the inner city of Memphis does have a lot of property-related crimes, the city is safe overall. It is especially safe in the outlying suburbs. Some of the best neighborhoods to live in include the Fisherville area, the E. Shelby Drive area, and the Walnut Grove Road area. Other safe neighborhoods include Carrollwood Lane near Grandbury Place, Poplar Avenue near S. Perkins Road, and the Macon Road area.

Education in Memphis

Memphis is a part of Shelby County Schools. The public district is home to more than 200 schools. Additionally, Memphis is home to a wide variety of private schools, including Immaculate Conception Cathedral School and Christian Brothers High School, as well as many colleges and universities, such as the University of Memphis and Rhodes College.
